Help for Haiti

As a result of the earthquake, January 12, many have inquired about the artisans from Haiti and their families, asking what one can do to help.

After days of collectively holding our breath as an organization, we had contact with  Caribbean Crafts on Thursday. Caribbean Crafts is in the process of contacting artisans and it appears that most of them are okay; however, many people’s homes have been damaged.  The email said, "[we] thank you very much for your message of support. We now more than ever have a lot to do to help our workers and to assist them with food water and basic things that they need...We will send messages regularly to keep you informed. Once again on behalf of our artisans I thank you for your support. We believe that we are among the lucky ones and are ready to be part of the reconstruction of a better Haiti.

Gisele Fleurant of Comite Artisanal Haitien (CAH) also sent a brief update on their efforts to contact artisans. Gisele wrote:
In the Jacmel area, almost all the artisans reported workshops and houses down. In the Leogane/Gressier area (where stone carving is done), they all called also to say that they are OK but all houses down. In Croix des Bouquets, all CAH artisans are OK with almost no houses down. The main problem is Port-au-Prince where the most damages happened. So far only 25 of 100 artisans called to say that they are OK but lost houses.

Thanks to you all for your messages of solidarity and hope. I will transmit that to all the artisans. Be sure that this will be a big help in our recovery process. Thanks again, so much.
Best,
Gisele

The prayers and thoughts of the entire Ten Thousand Villages family have been expressed to our artisan groups.

At the moment, there are two ways Ten Thousand Villages customers can help:

1. Make a financial donation to the Mennonite Central Committee. The Mennonite Central Committee has an excellent reputation for serving the immediate needs of people following a natural disaster and have already designated $100,000 to Haitian relief. Find out more on the Mennonite Central Committee website.

2. Continue to buy Haitian products from Ten Thousand Villages.  Our artisans have told us over and again that the fastest way they, their families, and their communities can recover from disaster is to get back to work. To that end, we have now clearly marked all our Haitian items in the store.

In the meantime, we will keep our artisans, all the people of Haiti, and the relief workers in our thoughts and prayers.
